Dubrovnik

Many superlatives describe Dubrovnik and it is, of course, "The Pearl of the Adriatic" and even George Bernard Shaw proclaimed:"If you want to see paradise on earth, come to Dubrovnik". The city is stunningly dramatic and picturesque and holidays to Croatia should always include at least a cursory visit. The entire Dalmatian Coast is really physically beautiful and worth exploring at leisure.

Jutting as a picturesque promontory dipping its toes in the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is protected by massively thick walls built between the 13th and 17th centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Medieval style cobblestoned streets, meandering alleys, baroque buildings and marble squares all huddle within the walls and provide the most atmospheric location for strolling and enjoying pavement cafe culture. Dubrovnik is busy in summer months and many large cruise ships visit to disgorge their passengers for day trips.

Outside Dubrovnik's walls, the landscape is quite hilly and covered in lovely pine forests and the coastline is indented with secluded coves and beaches. The little resort of Lapad is relaxing and enjoyable. Offshore, there are many islands where boat trips operate on a regular basis - highly recommended for a quick visit or a few days stay. Try our own Dalmatian Highlights cruise for a truly memorable trip.

The little resort of Cavtat (15 km south) has become popular as a tourist haunt where the beach is pebbly and the infrastructure is well developed.

The whole area is full of historical treasures, magnificent monuments and local museums, so Croatia holidays can be full of sightseeing, beach relaxation and shopping for lovely crafts and souvenirs. The waters along the coast are turquoise and translucent, so swimming and sailing are heavenly.

Direct flights to Dubrovnik from Ireland operate regularly and we've selected a great range of Dubrovnik hotels.
